Theophrastus was a student, collaborator, and successor of Aristotle; his writings on plants form a counterpart to Aristotle's zoological works. In the Enquiry into Plants he classifies and describes varieties of plants; in De Causis Plantarum he turns to plant physiology. Books One and Two (in Volume I) discuss generation, sprouting, flowering, and fruiting. Books Three and Four (Volume II) study cultivation and agricultural methods.
