Detalles del libro

Like its Greek counterpart, this is a new grammar for both absolute beginners and students who already have a sound knowledge of the language but need to revise and enhance it. It can be used side by side with any textbook (Reading Latin, Wheelock's, Oxford Latin Course, etc.) as a reference and support grammar. ? ALL NECESSARY GRAMMAR: With complete explanations, removing the need for the student to consult a larger or more advanced grammar after the initial stages. ? CLEAR EXPLANATIONS: Grammar explained as if hearing the teacher?s voice from the whiteboard, with additional class-style comments included where necessary. ? CLEAR STRUCTURE: Division into different blocks for the nominal system, the verbal system, syntax of cases and syntax of clauses, and internal subdivisions in each of these blocks for a completely clear presentation. ? BASIC VOCABULARY: List of the most useful terms that follow a given scheme after it has been presented: nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. ? USE OF ORIGINAL AUTHORS: Combination of made-up examples, which allows the adaptation of any sentence to an easy level when necessary, and sentences taken from classical authors for more advanced students. ? APPENDICES: Covering idiomatic expressions (both verbal and non-verbal expressions) and words easily confused (also both verbal and non-verbal forms). ? EXERCISES IN AN ADDITIONAL BOOK (in preparation): Allowing the grammar itself to be kept to a more reasonable size and price, ideal for those who want only the grammar for consultation. ? WHOLE GRAMMATICAL INDEX: All the grammatical terms relating to accidence and syntax (functions, types of verbs, kinds of subordinates, different uses of participles, etc.), alphabetically presented at the end of the book. ? INDEX OF LATIN GRAMMATICAL WORDS: Lists all Latin words used in presenting and explaining grammatical functions and usage. The price of the book has been left lower than expected for a book of this size (348 pages) as it is a book aimed mainly at students.

Juan Coderch (MA, PhD) has taught Latin and Greek at the University of Oxford (Faculty of Classics, 2003-7) and since 2007 has been Senior Language Tutor in Greek and Latin at the University of St Andrews. Apart from his academic activities, among other things he maintains a web site of world news in Classical Greek (www.akwn.net), has translated a case of the detective Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a story of Don Camillo, by Giovanni Guareschi, into Classical Greek (both published together in a single book by Metheksis Editions, Greece), is the author of "Teaching Ancient Languages: a selected guide to available material" (published by the Higher Education Academy, 2009), has collaborated with the Scottish Qualification Authority as a member of the Qualification Design Team for Classical Languages in the design of the new Curriculum for Excellence and is the author of the whole series of four books for Greek and Latin languages: ?Classical Greek: A New Grammar,? ?Latin: A New Grammar,? and their two accompanying books of exercises. He has also translated Le Petit Prince (by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) into Ancient Greek. He has developed a strong interest in the usage of Ancient Greek and Latin as live and spoken languages.
