The dog-hero, Buck, begins his life in a happy home in California, but is sold and made to work in a sled-team transporting supplies in Alaska during the Gold Strike of 1897. As well as describing Buck’s hard life, the story shows the loving relationship that can grow between dog and man, even under harsh conditions.
