Se trata de una epístola imaginaria de Lord Chandos, joven noble de la época isabelina, a Francis Bacon, para disculparse por la completa renuncia a la actividad literaria y su llamado al silencio. La acompaña además en este volumen la breve y contundente conferencia “Poesía y vida”.
Hugo von Hofmannsthal (Viena, 1 de febrero de 1874 - ibídem, 15 de julio de 1929) fue un poeta, dramaturgo, narrador y ensayista austriaco.
