A funcional approach is focused first on theclausal level considering speech acts and information units. Thencohesion and coherence are examined as the distinctive categories oftexts. Finally the various groupings of texts into types, genres andregisters are described.

This is the fourth of the fourvolumes that comprise the series English grammar in focus, acollection of handbooks that is aimed to familiarize universitystu-dents with the essentials of English grammatical description.Although each volume can be used as a self-contained coursebook, theseries as a whole is intended to serve as a comprehensive introduction to all levels of grammatical description, from the morpheme as thesmallest constituent of grammar, to complex textual units.
