The night seems to be like any other whenKiara finishes her shift as a nurse at a hospital near Central Park,but the arrival of Stella, an old, injured woman, holds herback.
The young woman immediately feels connected to her. Soonafter, she learns that this lady is a well-known art collector. During her stay in the hospital, Stella reveals to Kiara secrets of herinteresting and glamorous life. She tells her about her origins inSlovenia, her arrival in New York, and how she has built herempire.

Kiara also discovers that, despite her fortune, Stellahides a great sadness caused by the death of her son and thedisappearance of her daughter.
After several failed attempts tofind her, Stella decides to send Kiara to Europe, to her hometown,where her daughter was born at the end of World War II.
Kiara isnot entirely satisfied with her profession or sure of her relationship with Albert, an ambitious obstetrician.
