This volume offers a useful resource that is both a historical and interdisciplinary introduction to the foundations of cognitive science. Tracing the history of central concepts from the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century, this study surveys the contributions of philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and computer science. It then investigates theory of mind based on the digital computer, and alternatively, neural network models, and compares the two approaches. It is a suitable text for introductory courses in cognitive science and would serve as a supplementary text for courses in philosophy of mind.
