El General Hans Speidel, jefe del Estado Mayor del mariscal Rommel en esos momentos, elaboró el plan de defensa contra el desembarco aliado y dirigió las operaciones en las condiciones impuestas por el Führer. Además, participó en la conjura para matar a Hitler el 20 de julio de 1944, cuyo fracaso provocó su arresto por la Gestapo. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue el reorganizador del Ejército alemán, ocupando la jefatura del Mando Central de la OTAN en Europa.
